Tips for Healthy Hair That Everyone Can Do

February 27, 2020

I don't do posts like this very often but ever since I've been posting more videos over on IGTV on Instagram, I've been getting more questions about my hair and how I style it and what products I use - Thanks for paying attention to what I'm saying, guys! I always give a similar answer to the people asking me questions about my hair routine in my inbox because I rarely use specific products when it comes to my hair, which I know was probably the reason you're here, reading this. I do have GOOD NEWS though...You don't need to go out and buy something special because I don't believe there are any magic products (no matter what the influencers of Instagram say) and TRUST ME, if you ever hear me say those words about a product, you'll know it must be incredible and life-changing.

Reduce the amount of heat.

I know this isn’t always possible every day, but if you’re able to wash your hair the night before and let it air dry before you go to bed, or shower first thing in the morning and do the rest of your routine before your hair so you can minimize the amount of time you spend blow-drying it then it’ll go a long way. I have pretty straight hair but it has some frizzy curl underneath so what I do sometimes is just twirl it into a ballerina bun, secured with a satin scrunchie when it’s still very slightly damp and leave that in for a little while. When you let it down you’ll have some texture and body to it and hopefully, it won’t still be pin-straight.

Use hair oil or serum.

There’s no specific product that I am recommending in this post because I have used multiple different hair oils over the years and as long as you are using a high-quality hair oil then you should achieve similar results. Rub a couple of drops in your hands before applying to the ends of your hair. Avoid the roots because they tend to not need any extra moisture and won’t suck up the oil.

Don’t use a low-quality shampoo.

I’m not going to recommend specific products in this post because I switch up my products quite often and the main difference that I notice comes from quality, not branding. I only use products that don’t contain animal products and are cruelty-free but beyond that, don’t go and just buy the cheapest bottle you can find because your hair will pay the price. Right now I am currently using Color Proof because that’s the line that Burke Hair Lounge carries in the salon at the moment and I can go and fill up my bottles and avoid any unnecessary single-use plastic. Their products are also sulphate-free which is a nice bonus!

Use a wooden hairbrush.

I’ll start this off by saying that I don’t brush my hair that often. I usually finger-comb it when it’s damp after the shower as I’m putting my hair oil in. Wooden brushes look gorgeous and are much more eco-friendly than plastic brushes. There are quite a few benefits to using a wooden brush instead of plastic. The wooden bristles help to better distribute the natural oils in your hair from your roots to your ends, allowing you to go longer between washes. I recommend about 100 brush strokes a day or before your shower. This specific brush easily penetrates thicker hair and distributes styling products easily.

Sleep on a satin pillowcase.

Sleeping on a satin pillowcase is not only good for your skin at preventing wrinkles but it’s also great for your hair! It helps reduce frizz and breakage because your hair slips off instead of getting caught. I got mine from Winner's (a.k.a. Marshall's, TJ Maxx in the U.S.). If you're vegan make sure you get satin, not silk.

Don’t over-wash your hair.

Try and minimize the number of times you wash your hair per week. I plan my showers around workouts so that I don’t need to wash my hair every single day. If you’re one of those people that feels like they need to wash their hair every day, see if you can use dry-shampoo or wear a hat, or slick-back pony to extend the wash an extra day. The more often you do this, the less often you’ll need to wash it because your scalp gets good at balancing itself out if you just give it a chance!

Supplements! Not just any supplements. (see note below)**

This one is a bonus because I started taking this supplement when I broke my ankle back in August of 2018 to help rebuild the cartilage. I had done my research on collagen and collagen production and I wanted to take a supplement that would help my body produce its own collagen. Our bodies are smart and know where to send nutrients so I began my search. I went to Nature's Fare and looked at the plant-based collagen section and found one by Garden of Life. I was taking the recommended dose every day for three months straight and I made the conscious decision to only start taking them every second day because I didn't want to have to pay for another haircut. My hair was growing so fast that I went back into my photos to check the date that I got my hair cut because I couldn't believe it had grown 2.5 inches in three months. My mom also started taking this specific brand because after having her nails done for so long, they needed some repair. Her nails are now strong and no longer have ridges in them! I still take this supplement to this day!
